From WBNG 12 News?..
What do the numbers five, two, one and zero mean to you? For one local school district they could be the key to a healthier lifestyle.
A new program is launched that aims to fight childhood obesity.
Following steps to a healthier lifestyle just got easier.
?Let?s Go 5-2-1-0? let?s the numbers speak for themselves.
?Specific programs for parents and caregivers to try to sort of improve their skills in terms of the ways in which they interact with their kids, to try to promote healthy diet and physical activity,? said Dr. David Strogatz of Bassett Research Institute.
The rules are simple.
Five or more fruits and vegetables,
Two hours or less of recreational TV time,
One hour or more of physical activity,
and Zero sugary drinks a day.
?Now we?re starting to see kids that have diabetes related to obesity and diet. It?s a big problem, and our whole society is like that it?s not just our small town, it?s everywhere,? said Vicki Johnson of Edmeston.
Bassett Research Institute is funding the program and laying out a road map for parents to follow.
?Well because it?s something you need to do for your children. We have too many overweight children, and if you care about your kids, all parents do, you want them to be healthier,? said Johnson.
The kids at Edmeston Central School will soon learn what the numbers five, two, one, and zero will mean in their lifestyle.
?We know that students who eat well and exercise regularly perform better in school so that?s really the benefit for us as an educational institution,? said Edmeston Superintendent Brian Hunt.
