Time bomb: Military ordnance in Gulf of Mexico poses threat to shipping, says expert

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Millions of pounds of unexploded bombs and other military ordnance that were dumped decades ago in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as off the coasts of both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, could now pose serious threats to shipping lanes and the 4,000 oil and gas rigs in the Gulf, warns two Texas A&M University oceanographers.

William Bryant and Neil Slowey, professors of oceanography who have more than 90 years of combined research experience in all of Earth's oceans, along with fellow researcher Mike Kemp of Washington, D.C., say millions of pounds of bombs are scattered over the Gulf of Mexico and also off the coasts of at least 16 states, from New Jersey to Hawaii.

Bryant says the discarded bombs are hardly a secret. "This has been well known for decades by many people in marine science and oceanography," he explains.

He will give a presentation in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Oct. 1 about the bombs to a group of oceanographers and marine scientists in a conference titled "International Dialogue on Underwater Munitions."

"This subject has been very well documented through the years," Bryant explains. "My first thought when I saw the news reports of the Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf two years ago were, 'Oh my gosh, I wonder if some of the bombs down there are to blame.'"

Military dumping of unused bombs into the Gulf and other sites started in 1946 and continued until 1970, when it was finally banned.

Millions of pounds -- no one, including the military, knows how many -- were sent to the ocean floor as numerous bases tried to lessen the amount of ordnance at their respective locations.

"The best guess is that at least 31 million pounds of bombs were dumped, but that could be a very conservative estimate," Bryant notes.

"And these were all kinds of bombs, from land mines to the standard military bombs, also several types of chemical weapons. Our military also dumped bombs offshore that they got from Nazi Germany right after World War II. No one seems to know where all of them are and what condition they are in today."

Photos show that some of the chemical weapons canisters, such as those that carried mustard gas, appear to be leaking materials and are damaged.

"Is there an environmental risk? We don't know, and that in itself is reason to worry," explains Bryant. "We just don't know much at all about these bombs, and it's been 40 to 60 years that they've been down there."

With the ship traffic needed to support the 4,000 energy rigs, not to mention commercial fishing, cruise lines and other activities, the Gulf can be a sort of marine interstate highway system of its own. There are an estimated 30,000 workers on the oil and gas rigs at any given moment.

The bombs are no stranger to Bryant and Slowey, who have come across them numerous times while conducting various research projects in the Gulf, and they have photographed many of them sitting on the Gulf floor like so many bowling pins, some in areas cleared for oil and gas platform installation.

"We surveyed some of them on trips to the Gulf within the past few years," he notes. "Ten are about 60 miles out and others are about 100 miles out. The next closest dump site to Texas is in Louisiana, not far from where the Mississippi River delta area is in the Gulf. Some shrimpers have recovered bombs and drums of mustard gas in their fishing nets."

Bombs used in the military in the 1940s through the 1970s ranged from 250- to 500- and even 1,000-pound explosives, some of them the size of file cabinets. The military has a term for such unused bombs: UXO, or unexploded ordnance.

"Record keeping of these dump sites seems to be sketchy and incomplete at best. Even the military people don't know where all of them are, and if they don't know, that means no one really knows," Bryant adds. He believes that some munitions were "short dumped," meaning they were discarded outside designated dumping areas.

The subject of the disposal of munitions at sea has been discussed at several offshore technology conferences in recent years, and it was a topic at an international conference several years ago in Poland, Bryant says.

"The bottom line is that these bombs are a threat today and no one knows how to deal with the situation," Bryant says. "If chemical agents are leaking from some of them, that's a real problem. If many of them are still capable of exploding, that's another big problem.

"There is a real need to research the locations of these bombs and to determine if any are leaking materials that could be harmful to marine life and humans," Bryant says.

Chevy, GM Seek To Beat The $1.1 Million Raised In 2011 For Breast Cancer

Chevrolet, along with General Motors employees, dealers, and customers, are renewing their commitment to fight breast cancer for 2012. The groups are looking to surpass the nearly $1.1 million raised by the American Cancer Society via Chevy?s nationwide grassroots assistance.

The Bow Tie brand is launching several October events to drum up financial support for the cause, starting with GM?s worldwide headquarters at the Renaissance Center in Detroit being lit with pink bands to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For the first time, the Chevy Spark will be present and accounted for: a special ?Pink Out? Spark wears a production-spec Techno Pink hue and is decorated with custom pink elements inside and out. Designed to honor breast cancer survivors and supporters, the ?Pink Out? Spark will visit community walks throughout October.

In 2011, The Bow Tie brand?s support raised $1,079,633 in contributions to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for the American Cancer Society. The funds go to funding research, wellness, and breast cancer awareness education, as well as support for break cancer patients and their families.

Planned Chevy-sponsored events in October in support of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer:

Chevrolet and GM Employee Walks

All month, General Motors facilities, plants and warehouses across the country will participate in fund-raising walks.

Chevrolet Dealership Walks

Hundreds of dealerships have already signed up to sponsor teams in community walks throughout October with more expected to join. These walks alone accounted for more than half of the money raised in 2011 that went to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Those interested in participating in a Making Strides for Breast Cancer walk in their community can visit www.makingstrideswalk.org.

Chevrolet Certified Service

Customers who bring their vehicle to a Chevy dealer for qualifying services in October can contribute part or all of their rebates and Chevrolet will match them, up to a total of $150,000. A $39.95 oil and filter change, tire rotation and 27-multi-point inspection is $29.95 after the $10 mail-in rebate. The $99.95 (per axle) ACDelco Durastop ceramic brake pads service is $74.95 after the $25 mail-in rebate. For more information, visit mycertifiedservicerebates.com.

Chevrolet Racing

  • A Making Strides Against Breast Cancer-themed pink Camaro SS pace car will appear at selected Chevrolet dealers and GM events throughout October.
  • Chevrolet and Tony Stewart Racing will display a specially wrapped USAC National Midget Car at races at Eldora Speedway in Ohio (Sept. 21-22); Mechanicsburg, Pa. (Sept. 28-29); and the New York State Fair in Syracuse (Oct. 5-7). At those races, representatives from the American Cancer Society will distribute brochures with information on local walks, the importance of early detection and ways to reduce the risk of breast cancer.
  • In early September, Chevrolet contributed $6,200 to the American Cancer Society ? $200 for each of the 31 caution laps during the AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Breast cancer survivors and their families also spent time in the pink Camaro SS pace car with Team Chevy drivers Jamie McMurray and Ron Hornaday, Jr.

Chevrolet Test Drives

Chevrolet will contribute $5 to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for every vehicle test drive at these Southern Women?s Shows: Birmingham, Ala. (Oct. 4-7); Orlando, Fla. (Oct. 11-14); and Jacksonville, Fla. (Oct. 18-21).

New process for nanotube semiconductors could be graphene's ticket to primetime (video)

New patented nanotube semiconductors could be graphene's ticket to primetime

In many ways, graphene is one of technology's sickest jokes. The tantalizing promise of cheap to produce, efficient to run materials, that could turn the next page in gadget history has always remained frustratingly out of reach. Now, a new process for creating semiconductors grown on graphene could see the super material commercialized in the next five years. Developed at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the patented process "bombs" graphene with gallium, which forms droplets, and naturally arranges itself to match graphene's famous hexagonal pattern. Then, arsenic is added to the mix, which enters the droplets and crystallizes at the bottom, creating a stalk. After a few minutes of this process the droplets are raised by the desired height. The new process also does away with the need for a (relatively) thick substrate to grow the nanowire on, making it cheaper, more flexible and transparent. The inventors state that this could be used in flexible and efficient solar cells and light emitting diodes. We say forward the revolution.

It's not too late for troubled fisheries, experts say

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? A study published in Science magazine and co-authored by Bren School Sustainable Fisheries Group (SFG) researchers and their colleagues confirms suspicions that thousands of "data-poor" fisheries, representing some 80 percent of the world's fisheries, are in decline but could recover with proper management.

The authors of "Status and Solutions for the World's Unassessed Fisheries" also found that taking quick action to allow depleted stocks to recover to sustainable levels could result in future catches that are 8 to 40 percent larger than are predicted if current unsustainable fishing practices continue.

The findings were made possible by a new assessment technique developed by the researchers, which allowed them to determine fish population status using far less data than are required by a traditional stock assessment, which is both expensive and time-consuming and impractical for a high percentage of the world's fisheries. Substantial population data are available for only about 20 percent of the world's 10,000 fish stocks, and those well-studied fisheries tend to be in better shape than fisheries for which little data exist.

"For most fisheries, we simply didn't know how many fish were out there and whether their populations were trending up or down," says lead author and Bren School professor of economics Christopher Costello. "Without good information on fish populations, it can be hard to manage sustainably. It's like trying to decide how far you can drive your car without knowing how much gas is in the tank."

Further, Costello explains, lacking sound estimates for a stock's population, "Political pressure tends to dominate decision making, and we end up catching too much. Over time, this can lead a fishery to collapse."

Co-author and Bren School dean, Steve Gaines, describes the data-rich 20 percent of fisheries as "a tiny slice that can give us a skewed view" of the health of global fisheries.

The authors caution that the new assessment method cannot take the place of formal assessment programs for individual fisheries, but they do provide accurate global and regional information that can be used to inform fisheries management decisions. "Using these tools at a regional scale, we can gain up to 80 percent of the insights of traditional assessment approaches at just 1 percent of the cost," says Gaines.

The tool enabled the researchers to provide a new global status report that includes these previously unmeasured fisheries, bringing thousands of what managers call "unassessed" fisheries into focus. The results show that more than half of the world's fisheries are in decline and that, across the globe, stocks for which robust data exist are doing better than those that are less-studied, regardless of which country manages them.

"If we look at assessed stocks, we can be pretty satisfied that fishery management systems are generally working to ensure long-term sustainability," says University of Washington scientist and co-author Ray Hilborn. "For previously unassessed stocks, this doesn't appear to be true."

An interesting finding -- again, made possible by employing this new assessment tool for data-poor fisheries -- is that in large-scale fisheries, stocks that are measured and tracked are at similar levels as those that that have not been formally measured. But under current fishing pressure, their futures look very different: the assessed stocks are starting to show signs of recovery, while fisheries for which little data exists continue to decline. Further, in small-scale fisheries, data-poor stocks are in far worse shape than their well-studied counterparts, and many are plummeting at alarming rates. These small-scale, data-poor fisheries are critical to local food security in many parts of the world.

While the impact on food security is most significant for local-level (small-scale) fisheries in poorer countries, explains co-author, UCSB ecologist, and SFG scientist Sarah Lester, "This isn't just a developing-world problem. Small, unassessed fisheries in the U.S. and Europe are often in as bad a shape as those in the developing world."

While many of the world's fisheries are in trouble, the authors suggest that the majority of them can still rebound with better management.

"Strong management could increase the number of fish in the ocean by more than 50 percent," says Gaines. "When fish populations are healthy they produce more young. It may seem paradoxical, but we can get more fish on our plates by leaving more in the water."

Time is of the essence. "These fisheries can rebound," Costello says, "but the longer we wait, the harder and more costly it will be to bring them back. In another ten years, the window of opportunity may have closed."

The study in Science is part of a larger study titled "Charting a Course to Sustainable Fisheries," released this week by the consulting firm California Environmental Associates. It evaluates successes and gaps in fishery management and conservation programs around the world, highlighting the fact that while methods for returning dwindling fisheries to health are understood, political battles often prevent them from being put into action.

The report shows that where gains are being made, such as in the U.S., where many large fisheries are starting to recover, they result from a combination of efforts: relying on strong science to set total allowable fishing levels, closing some areas to allow for stock rebuilding, and using sustainable seafood markets and rights-based management strategies that give fishermen secure access to a proportion of catch. The report shows that, while there is no one-size-fits-all solution to eliminate overfishing, success can come from employing proven principles and practices while fine-tuning them to suit the specific circumstances and characteristics of individual locations around the world.

"The key is to use and share these practices more broadly," says Matthew Elliott, principal of CEA and author of "Charting a Course to Sustainable Fisheries. "In many areas of the world, particularly in the tropics and sub-tropics, we see fisheries expanding quickly with little in the way of management. This research fills an important information gap for those fisheries. We hope it will draw more international attention to fisheries management in the many parts of the world that we have historically ignored."

"This isn't something where we need another twenty years of science," says Gaines. "We know what it takes."

"Healthy ocean fisheries hold the potential to feed a growing population without destroying the supporting ecosystems to the point where they no longer produce seafood," adds Elliott. "Within our lifetime, we can make sustainable global fisheries the norm rather than the exception."

Dickey gets 20th win, leads Mets over Pirates 6-5

NEW YORK (AP) ? R.A. Dickey became the first knuckleballer to win 20 games in more than three decades, tying his career-high with 13 strikeouts and leading the New York Mets over Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 Thursday behind David Wright's tiebreaking, three-run homer.

A 37-year-old knuckleballer who had never won more than 11 games in any previous season, Dickey (20-6) overcame an outstanding, climbing catch by Travis Snider more than 2 feet above the right-field wall that robbed Mike Baxter of a tying home run in the second inning.

Dickey, throwing his hard knuckler at about 78 mph, fell behind 2-0 and 3-1. Former Texas teammate Rod Barajas doubled in a run and homered, but the Mets clawed back in their final home game of the season and took a 6-3 lead on Wright's homer in the fifth and held on in a nervous ninth.

Dickey allowed three runs and eight hits in 7 2-3 innings, walking two and reaching double digits in strikeouts for the seventh time this season. He leads the NL with 222 Ks.

He is the first 20-game winner for the pitching-proud Mets since Frank Viola in 1990 and the first knuckleballer to accomplish the feat since Houston's Joe Niekro in 1980, according to STATS LLC. Viola also reached 20 with a win over the Pirates.

The crowd of 31,506 ? the Mets offered $10 tickets to boost attendance for the matinee ? gave Dickey large ovations when he walked to the bullpen to warm up, when he came back to the dugout, when he took the mound and each time he batted. When he came out after walking Snider in the eighth, he tipped his cap to the excited fans, exchanged high-fives with teammates in the dugout and took a seat on the bench.

Jon Rauch, pitching on his 34th birthday, followed Dickey and allowed Alex Presley's two-run homer in the ninth. Bobby Parnell retired Josh Harrison on a groundout and Jose Tabata on a flyout for his fifth save.

Pittsburgh, which led the NL Central at the All-Star break, lost for the 20th time in 26 games and dropped to 76-80. The Pirates must win five of their last six games ? against Cincinnati and Atlanta ? to avoid their 20th consecutive losing season. Pittsburgh's streak of futility already is a record for North American major professional leagues.

Snider gave the Pirates a memory with one of the best defensive plays of the season. He dug his cleats into the chain-link fence, hooked his left arm on top of the wall in front of the Mo's Zone seats, hoisted himself up and grabbed Baxter's drive in the webbing of the glove on his right hand well about the 8-foot wall.

NL batting leader Andrew McCutchen left the game in the seventh inning with discomfort in left knee after attempting to make a diving catch. McCutchen trapped a soft fly into short center by Daniel Murphy and threw to second to force Ruben Tejada, who began the play on first base and wasn't sure whether the ball was caught. The Pirates star then was taken out of the game.

McCutchen was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts, dropping his average to .332, just ahead of San Francisco's Buster Posey (.331) and St. Louis' Yadier Molina (.320).

Kevin Correia (11-11) gave up six runs and seven hits. Given a 3-1 lead, he allowed Scott Hairston's RBI single in the fourth and Murphy's tying single in the fifth before Wright hit an opposite-field drive to right for his 21st home run this season.

Barajas hit an opposite-field RBI double that hopped the right-field wall in the second, and Jordy Mercer following with a run-scoring infield single to Wright at third.

Ike Davis led off the bottom half with his 31st homer. Barajas boosted the lead to 3-1 when he homered on an 0-2 pitch in the fourth, a drive over the old 16-foot wall in left.

NOTES: The Mets drew 2,242,803 to Citi Field this year, down from 3.15 million in 2009, 2.56 million in 2010 and 2.35 million last year. This is the team's lowest home attendance since 2.19 million at Shea Stadium in 2003. ... Mets broadcaster Keith Hernandez shaved off his mustache before the game in a charity fundraiser. ... Pirates 2B Neil Walker missed his third straight game because of a lower back injury.

British Airways tests eliminating online check-in

It?s a familiar process to most air travelers by now: Watch the clock before your trip and log on to a computer within 24 hours of your flight to check in online. But even that simple routine, which has been a huge improvement over the previous tradition of standing in a long queue at the airport, might go away in the future ? something industry watchers say isn?t necessarily a plus.

Do Gender Stereotypes Play a Role in the Massachusetts Senate Race?

Former Boston Mayor Ray Flynn's recent endorsement of Sen.?Scott Brown?of Massachusetts was predictable, but it was coupled with a surprising, remarkably blithe assertion of ignorance about Brown's politics or policy predilections. "I didn't go through his congressional record or roll call," Flynn admitted. "I don't have time for that." How does the Republican Brown compare to Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren? "I don't know the first thing about her." Flynn's endorsement was not about "politics or ideology," he explained; rather, it was a "nonpolitical message about the man," based on "what I knew about his personal life growing up."

Apparently, the political is purely personal for Flynn. In fact, Brown is appealing to voters who share this tendency to base hard political decisions on soft "nonpolitical" factors. He even presents himself as essentially nonpolitical, practically posing as an independent; the word "Republican" is not often uttered by the Brown campaign. He banks on what has been Warren's relative unlikability among voters who view her as preachy--rarely failing to address her as "Professor," with barely concealed disdain. He presses vituperative attacks on Warren's character, which he premiered at their first debate, when he called her a liar for claiming Native American ancestry.

Latest Politics Posts:
Loading feed...

Warren (whom I support) is trying to make the race about policy--about their differing approaches to tax reform, Brown's voting record, and his political allegiances; she stresses that his reelection could give conservative Republicans control of the U.S. Senate. She has her own personal hardship narrative, like virtually every candidate these days, but for Warren's campaign, the political is mostly political.

It's an interesting study in gender stereotypes. This clash between a woman focusing on policy and a man resorting to personal, emotional appeals embodies a subtle role reversal. Warren cites Brown's record against equality and choice: his vote against equal pay; his vote to allow nonreligious as well as religious employers to deny employees contraceptive coverage. (Brown has won the support of Massachusetts Citizens for Life.) He responds with an irrelevant personal credential--his childhood defense of his abused mother. "I have been fighting for women since I was 6 years old," he says, as if his love for the women in his family were at issue, not his advocacy for the women in the commonwealth.

Maybe feminism achieves an inadvertent victory when a male candidate more than a female relies on a shallow view of the personal as political. Maybe not. With his athletic, truck-driving, regular-guy image, Brown benefits from gender stereotypes, even as he adopts the emotional approach to issues (and voters) stereotypically associated with women. Meanwhile, the logical, intellectual Warren represents a stereotypically male model of rationalism, maybe to her detriment, maybe not (one can hope).

Double standards have weakened over the past few decades, but they still retain power. Unlike Brown, Warren has, so far, been hurt more than helped by gender stereotypes (which classify her as schoolmarmish), and she has less room to challenge them. Imagine the reaction if Warren had called out Brown for dishonesty in her first remarks at their first debate; imagine if she had declared (and continued declaring) that he failed the "character test" by checking the "pro-choice" box for the sake of advancing his career. She'd be derided as "shrill" and "strident," and, in private, a "bitch."

Reputed good guy Scott Brown has risked eroding his own likability with his sneering attacks, and male candidates sometimes complain that they're constrained by tradition from aggressively confronting female opponents. But that tradition is fading in our hyper-partisan age (except perhaps in primaries), and he risks less than she would if she were to adopt his tactics. The political can be stubbornly and stupidly personal, indeed.?

Dating: Rejected By Her | Better After 50

I realize that the odds of her calling or emailing me are slightly less than the odds of Mitt Romney standing in line to buy an Extra Value Meal. And yet I can?t go two hours without thinking about her. Every morning, I run to the computer hoping there will be a message from her. Every time the phone rings, I imagine it?s going to be her voice on the other end of the line.

But it isn?t. And it won?t be. She stopped returning messages many months ago. I really thought she was the love of my post-divorce life, but as it turns out, I was just the like of hers. I want to say that I?ve been able to get over that pain of having my heart discarded by someone I cared about, but the truth is, I still haven?t. Trust me, I know that breakups happen all the time. Still, there is something about romantic rejection after divorce that seems to carry an extra sting that I never anticipated.

I?d had my heart broken plenty of times before I got married. For every sad split, though, I was young and/or foolish enough to figure that there would be another house party or bar night next week where I could start the process over again. When I was single and in my 20s, whether I was bailing on somebody or she was bailing on me, rejection was a plus in some ways. First, it was like a spiritual reset button, allowing you to enjoy the endless possibilities of singlehood. And second, learning to lose is simply good training for later in life.

It?s all about trial and error; the trials are more fun, while the errors are less serious. Then you get married, and rejection takes on an entirely different, and much less redeeming, meaning. The whole rationale behind committing yourself to matrimony is that you?ll never have to be shot down by a potential partner again. You agree to that whole ??till death do us part? thing, which allows you to worry about kids, mortgages and choosing between satellite and cable TV services rather than who you?ll be breaking up with next.

Then, for 50 percent of us, divorce comes along. It doesn?t matter whether you?re instigating the end of the marriage or the one on the receiving end. This Super Bowl of all rejections erases any illusion of comfort when you start dating again. It?s like being in a car accident. You get back behind the wheel to drive again, but you always remember that sick feeling of impact and flinch just a little whenever you?re driving in traffic.

It?s hard not to feel a little bit wary after going all in on a relationship post-divorce. Not only have you experienced the biggest breakup of your life, you?re also most likely at an age where finding a second serious partner is much more difficult. Even with all the single soccer moms and weekend dads out there now, the pickings are still slimmer than they were when you were younger. That puts more pressure on ensuring that any relationship you do get involved in works out. Which, in turn, makes you feel like even more of a schmo when rejection happens.

And I?ve had that feeling plenty of times these past few years. There were the dozens of unreturned Match.com messages, the calls from the ones who did get back to me that ended with them saying ?I?ll check my schedule and get back to you,? the set-up dates who allowed me to buy them a few dinners and get a couple of front-seat make-out sessions in before ignoring my calls, the artist I saw for a couple of months until she texted her breakup.

I?m sure there were reasons for my various dismissals, at least half of which are probably valid. I could have been too short, too old, too obsessed with the Boston Red Sox, too consumed with my own jokes ? I?ll never really know, although maybe that?s for the best. At least I know why I rejected all the women who were interested in me, even if I never expressed that reason at the end of every coffee meet-up where I was more attracted to my iced latte than to the woman I was with, and every set-up date with a sweet but laughter-challenged companion.

It was because of her, the aforementioned woman who became everything to me. For a little while anyway. She had all the qualities that allowed me stop to worrying about the sadness that comes with divorce: beauty, humor, intelligence, style and an interest in me. And now all I have left is the vision problem she left me with: All I see when looking at other women is her. Or, rather, all the qualities that aren?t her.

I realize that I shouldn?t be taking the rejection so seriously. It just happens sometimes. And no matter who or what caused your divorce, the end result is that it should be viewed as liberation rather than punishment. It?s the chance to have some later-in-life freedom that your married friends no doubt envy and a time to explore many relationships rather than quickly settling back into another one.

Besides, while rejection does suck, you can?t feel the hurt if you didn?t feel an attraction first. Feeling that connection for somebody new is the best sign that you?re moving on with your life. I?m trying to move forward. For the first time in a year, I had a second date with someone and am actually looking forward to a third. (Which, I realize, could be setting me up for more memories of her and, ultimately, more rejection.)

Still, I?m going to use G. Gordon Liddy as my romantic guidance counselor. To prove his toughness, Liddy would apparently hold his hand over a candle until his palm burned. When asked if his stunt hurt, he?d say ?Yes, but the trick was to not mind the pain.? That is the perfect dating advice for anyone as consumed with rejection as I am. Sure, being on either end of getting dumped feels extra lousy when you?re still coping with the impact of divorce. The trick is not minding it.

B2B Social Media Marketing Tips for Success from - Online ...

amber naslundAs customers evolve and change the way that they find and consume information, marketers must innovate their approach to meet customers where they?re looking, especially in the social media world.

Business to Business marketing can involve many decision makers and sales cycles that take weeks or months. ?Navigating the mix of social content types for different customer segments over time can be a challenge. Luckily, we?ve picked the brains of some of the digital marketing?s world?s brightest to share their practical and innovative B2B marketing tips.

To that end, we visited with?Amber Naslund, who?is a business strategist with a strong focus on social media communication and community initiatives in the B2B Marketing arena. ?Amber is the co-author of The NOW Revolution, and her blog Brass Tack Thinking has been recognized for excellence in social media and community related content.

Please tell us about your role at SideraWorks and the kind of B2B marketing work you?re most excited about.

I?m the president and co-founder along with my business partner, Matt Ridings (our CEO). I?m particularly excited about the work we?re doing in traditionally challenging industries ? higher education, pharma, and professional services ? to help them move from ?doing??social media to becoming social businesses, both culturally and operationally.

At the MarketingProfs B2B Marketing Forum, the track keynote you?re giving, ?Creating a Social Center of Gravity? is about creating a scalable foundation for social business. ?Can you share at least 3 of the most important takeaways?

Sure. First, we?ll?wait a second. Isn?t this part classified? I think this part is classified. As in, I could tell you, but then I?d have to hunt you down.

How about I give you some code words to remember? Like ?networks?, ?culture? and ?scenarios?. All of those figure prominently in the quest to take your social media efforts and really weave them into the fabric of your business. The rest you?ll just have to show up for. Oh, and ?Rosebud?.

There?s a common association that it?s tough to come up with new B2B marketing ideas, but as you know, innovation exists within B2B as much or more as it does with consumer marketing ? just in different ways. What?s your process for coming up with new and innovative ideas for your B2B marketing efforts?

Oh, how tired I am of this argument.

Listen, B2B marketing is about one core thing: knowledge. Sharing it. Creating it. Making it more available to the people who need it. Enhancing it, adding value to it, offering new points of view on things we think we already know. Positioning a B2B company is about how you can help your customers do their jobs better.

We also take ourselves *way* too seriously in the B2B world (and I?ve been in it for the bulk of my career). We?re still people talking to people, we?re just spending more money and making a more complicated decision. But those decisions get made around individual connections and networks.

Innovative? Heck, I?d settle for seeing more really *good* B2B marketing based on the approaches and methods that we already have!

The digital marketing world with social media, big data and mobile has created a more complex environment for marketers and their approach in attracting, engaging and converting prospects to customers. Of course it depends on the project, but generally, what are some of the B2B marketing strategies you?ve had the most success with in 2012?

Content to explore ideas or share knowledge. Relationship development, both online and off, focused on identifying and solving key business challenges. Then making more content based on what we learn through those relationships. Rinse, repeat.

Developing a solid B2B marketing plan takes research, and understanding of the customer goals, pain points and journey. ?What are some of the most common myths or mistakes you?ve seen with B2B marketing planning? ?Any tips on how to be more successful?

Marketing planning in general often starts upside-down. We?re trying to sell our bosses and our teams the ships (Pinterest! Podcasts! Blogs!) instead of the destinations. Tactics come last, not first. Trust me, you?re glad now you didn?t have a fax strategy.

One of the reasons social business is becoming so important is that marketing efforts, especially through social media, have deep and sometimes complex implications for the rest of the organization. Marketing plans need to be developed in better concert with other areas of the organization to discuss those impact points, and plan for how to deal with them.

With all the hype in the business marketing media, it?s tempting for companies to chase trending B2B marketing tactics like social this and QR code that. How do you decide what the right B2B marketing tactical mix is for the engagements and projects you?re involved with?

It?s like you read my last answer!

The right tactical mix is only answered in one place: your listening and analysis efforts. That means first understanding where your customers and clients are ? online and off ? and making sure that at minimum, you?re serving their needs THERE and meeting their expectations for awareness, response, and participation. Forget the next big thing until you?ve got that figured out.

As for where your customers are going, or where they hope you?ll help them next, you need to ask them. Openly and often. The advantage for B2B is that we often have more focused client communities with very targeted needs, and a long relationship cycle that lends itself to talking with them. Even on that newfangled thing we call the phone.

There are many resources online and off (like the MarketingProfs B2B Forum) to leverage for practical and innovative information about modern B2B marketing. ?Of those resources, blogs can be particularly useful. What are your 3-4 favorite B2B marketing blogs?

Oh, the pressure of naming peers. Should I be using their code names too? Hmm. There are many, but for this round I?ll go with:

I?d add Lee ?Top This? Odden and TopRank and Ann ?Wicked Pissah? Handley from ?Profs, but I?m hoping those are givens.

Please share your advice for other B2B marketers out there on how they can be more innovative.

Be more innovative by realizing that marketing is not an island, and shifting your focus as a result.

Social business ? the result of actively adapting your organization to better collaborate and communicate with your peers, your customers, and your partners ? should be part of your vision even if you?re miles away.

Once you understand how and where marketing critically touches every part of an organization and how it has the potential to affect so many things ? for better and worse ? you?ll find that your perspective gets much broader and your marketing will get much, much smarter and more strategic.

Thank you Amber, for a no-nonsense approach to Social Media and B2B Marketing.

If you?re looking for even more insight on making your business more social, ?be sure to check out Amber?s Track Keynote at the B2B Marketing Forum conference in Boston: ?Creating a Social Center of Gravity? Friday, October 5th at 8:15am.

What?s your best B2B Marketing Innovation tip?
We would love to hear from you. ?Share your best B2B marketing innovation tip in the comments below and you will be entered to win your very own copy of Optimize?AND a copy of Content Rules. We?re taking entries until Wed 9/26 so share your tip today.

news: IT Sales - Capitalizing on the Information Technology ...

In recent years, The Information Technology sector has largely been seen as a major forerunner for the overall economy: hence, when the IT Industry is stagnant or declining, harder times are ahead. And when IT spending is on the rise, better times are coming.

This is more than urban legend - in today's world, IT is essentially the pulse of what is happening. So it's with little surprise that the recent surge in the IT sector is welcome news (especially to those working in IT.) And the effect is exponential - many other industries are recovering, and will require assistance on technology/project work. So we could say that IT Staffing has and will be a helping hand in the recovery process. And it's almost certain that IT sales will likely follow suit and grow as well. Which brings me to IT Salespeople.

With any organization, sales are the engine that drives... well... everything. The sales team brings in the revenue that makes development possible (although developers will argue that without them, there is nothing to sell. Touch, and we'll certainly visit the development role in a future article. But alas, this one is for sales.)

It's been my experience that many times, IT companies focus heavily on the tech aspect (as well they should), and sometimes push sales to the side a bit. I can understand that - after all, IT companies create new products and solve problems more than anything, and to many an IT professional, the tech should really sell itself. But, we all know that's just not so. Regardless, the sales teams for these companies are very often left behind, and typically an afterthought. However, the tried and true advice reigns here: when there is an upside swing in your industry, you want to ride it all the way from the bottom up to the top.

So my article here, as it pertains to sales and salespeople, is really twofold: the first thing I want to mention is not to look at sales as the endgame, and instead really embrace it. It's like the stock market - when prices are down, you buy. Thus, RIGHT NOW is the time to hire that superstar salesperson, sales manager, or both. As we emerge from the dark days of 2008-2009, you want to be able to hit the ground running, thus, getting that rock star sales team in place today (and not when everyone else is also looking) makes perfect sense.

However, just hiring isn't enough:

To really benefit from bringing on these new all-stars, they need to be fully trained in your product. One complaint I have heard from IT companies is that they receive negative feedback from end users not understanding how to properly use their newly acquired "solution". There is only one explanation for this: proper end user training was not offered, or just not sufficient. This is largely because the salesperson knows enough to sell, but not enough to train.

This is where your salespeople can really make a difference. Today, a handshake, a manual, and a help file as the salesperson says goodbye aren't enough. In small to medium sized companies without a dedicated "training" team, a salesperson who can actually service the account is looked on as an extremely valuable resource to your client. And the really good salespeople are very capable of doing this (another reason why you want to hire now, mind you.)

That's a perfect segue into my second point, which is to offer a few tips to help your salespeople ensure client satisfaction (and increase your referrals from testimonials ten fold!):

* Building Customer Relationships through consultative approaches is almost always looked upon favorably. Your salespeople should be akin to an advisor or "IT consultant", proposing solutions that are pertinent, instead of rattling off services that are irrelevant to the potential client. This is done by asking relevant questions and LISTENING to the responses that are received.

* Be selfless. If a salesperson is focusing solely on making a sale, then they are doing the client, yourself, and your company a major disservice. Prospects want to know how you can save them time, make them more profitable, and/or make their operation more efficient. They do not want to hear a long list of features, how great you or your company is, or anything else that does not help them solve a problem. Again, this harkens back to encouraging a consultative approach from your salespeople.

* Put in place a standard sales process, and envision potential sales as tangible items on a conveyor belt; track every single step from start to finish. As the conveyor belt moves along there may be bumps along the way, some may be minor but others may be enough to knock the sale off of the belt, losing the sale. By knowing where these major bumps are, you can put your finger on where your sales process falls short, and correct it.

* Make sure your salespeople know your product/service inside and out, and actually know how to use it in a business setting. With many new technologies coming out, and the average client significantly more technologically savvy, your salespeople really have to do their homework, and be well-trained. If your salespeople really know what they are talking about (and can articulate it to a client), they can establish themselves (and your company) as a credible source of information, which is helpful when developing relationships. In short, your clients are more likely to return if they know that YOU know your stuff (and have their best interest in mind).

These are just a few tips that I have come across from speaking with IT salespeople, their colleagues, employers, and clients' everyday. I hope you find them useful.

NEW YORK ? The 25-year-old man who jumped from a monorail car into the Bronx Zoo?s tiger den was not drunk or insane, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

?Apparently he has some fascination with tigers,? Kelly told CNN affiliate WABC. ?He visited the zoo in the last month, month and a half, and focused on that area.?

Kelly added there was no evidence Villalobos is mentally ill or was intoxicated.

?I don?t think it was malicious,? Kelly added. ?There was no indication he was drinking, but that he just ? momentarily lost any semblance of common sense.?

David Villalobos, who is hospitalized in stable condition, told police ?his leap was definitely not a suicide attempt, but a desire to be one with the tiger,? according to Paul Browne, chief spokesman for the NYPD.

Villalobos was riding on the zoo?s Wild Asia monorail around 3 p.m. Friday when he jumped out of the rail car, ?clearing the exhibit?s perimeter fence? and landing in the den, according to Bronx Zoo Director Jim Breheny.

Villalobos suffered a broken right shoulder, broken rib, collapsed lung, broken ankle, broken pelvis and puncture wounds, according to police spokesman Brian Sessa. Villalobos later claimed to have pet one of the tigers before it backed off, Sessa added.

The commissioner said most of Villalobos?s injuries appear to be the result of the 17-foot fall from the monorail.

Police said Villalobos was charged with misdemeanor trespassing and will be arraigned after he leaves the hospital.

Zoo officials said rescuers used a fire extinguisher to separate the man and the animal. Heeding instructions, Villalobos rolled ?under a hot wire to safety,? and the tiger backed off, Breheny said.

The zoo uses so-called hot wires ? or electrically charged cables ? as training tools to keep animals away from such areas as plant beds. If the animal comes into contact with the wire, it feels a small electric shock.

Villalobos? decision to follow instructions and roll under the wire ?probably saved his life,? Breheny told reporters Friday.

He was ?conscious and talking? as he was taken by ambulance to Jacobi Medical Center in Bronx, New York.

?I think it?s safe to say that if the tiger really wanted to do harm to this individual he certainly had the time to do it,? Breheny said. ?This is just an extraordinary occurrence that happened because ? somebody was deliberately trying to endanger themselves.?

The exhibit is called Tiger Mountain and houses Siberian tigers as well as Malayan tigers, according to the Bronx Zoo?s website.

The Bronx Zoo is the city?s flagship park run by the Wildlife Conservation Society.
