One of the lead programmers at Starbreeze, the developers behind the rebirth of the upcoming shooter, Syndicate, wishes the studio had more time for development
Syndicate is an and coming sci-fi shooter that is set to do add something different to the first-person shooter genre by placing a heavier emphasis on co-operative gameplay.
In fact, the demo of the game can cater up to four players playing simultaneously. While four player co-op does sound tempting, one has to wonder how it can compete in a market where Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 dominate.
However, it seems that Starbreeze is not looking to compete with those particular games and is looking to carve out a niche for itself. The studio?s expertise is in the first-person shooter genre and they seemed to have poured everything they could into the title.
The emphasis has to be on the ?could? part of the previous sentence, as the developer has now come out and stated that they wished they had more time to work on the game.
The lead co-op designer felt as if they could have done much more with the title had they been given more time, though at the same time he was more than proud of the studio had achieved with respect to the title.
?Let me put it this way: I?m really proud of the end result, but I?m not super satisfied. I want to have been able to have done more, but that?s always the feeling you get.?
He is not the first developer to come out and share such thoughts in public, as the developers who worked on EA?s Battlefield: Bad Company 2 also stated that they wished they could have done more with the game and were ?ashamed? of certain aspects o the title.
However, the Starbreeze staff member explained where he was coming from, ?"Unless someone says, okay, enough, we need to ship it, development will go on and on forever more or less or until everyone gets bored with it. It's been a long production: it's good to finally ship it, but at the same time, you always think, if we could have had half a year more, we could have done even more."
We will have to wait and see for ourselves when the game finally hits shelves later on this year.
