Sky will launch an internet based TV service in the UK in the first half of 2012

UK pay TV service Sky has just announced its quarterly results, and despite adding 100,000 subscribers as well as notching its "highest ever first-half adjusted operating profit" it will launch a new internet TV service, available to anyone in the country with a broadband connection. Sky describes the new over the top (OTT) service as being aimed at the 13 million UK households who don't currently subscribe to pay TV, with access available via "PC, laptop, tablet, smartphone, games console or connected TV." Initially, it will offer Sky Movies on demand joined by sports and entertainment options later, with access based on either monthly unlimited subscription or "pay-as-you-go" pricing. As far as the company's basic services, it will continue to develop its existing Sky Go product for standard pay-TV subscribers and zeebox iPad companion app, although this seems to initially be a worth competitor for things like Lovefilm and recent UK entrant Netflix. We have plenty of questions about what it will offer cord-cutters and cord-nevers in the UK when it launches in the first half of this year, we should find out more on the earnings call shortly. Until then, hit the PDF link for more detailed financial breakdowns, or check out the IPTV service press release after the break.

Update: Still waiting for Sky Go on Android? The company mentioned during its presentation that the app will finally arrive on Google's platform in February, starting with Samsung Galaxy and HTC handsets. It will also have new channels, including Sky 1, Sky Living and Sky Arts, plus, of course, the new Sky Sports F1 HD channel. The company is also expanding its broadband reach, with plans to cover a million more homes by June 2013, and add a Sky Broadband Unlimited Fibre option. For 20 a month, it offers 40 megabit download speed with no usage caps based on BT Fibre.

Obamas wrap up weekend with visit to museum (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The first family wrapped up a busy weekend with a walk Sunday to the Corcoran Gallery of Art.

President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle and their daughters, Sasha and Malia, strolled a block from the White House to the museum.

The Corcoran's current exhibits include "30 Americans," which the museum describes as a showcase of "many of the most important African-American artists of the last three decades."

Earlier Sunday, Obama played basketball with his daughters at the Interior Department. Saturday night, the first couple attended the 99th Annual Alfalfa Club Dinner, an annual black-tie get-together of some of the capital's movers and shakers.

Neeson's "Grey" wins box office weekend (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Survival story "The Grey" starring Liam Neeson in a battle against weather and wolves led the box office pack with a better-than-expected $20 million in ticket sales over the weekend.

"The Grey" knocked last weekend's winner, "Underworld: Awakening," to second place. The vampire and werewolf sequel starring Kate Beckinsale brought in $12.5 million from Friday through Sunday at domestic theaters, according to studio estimates compiled by Reuters on Sunday.

In "The Grey," Neeson returns to an action role as a man who leads a team of plane crash survivors who must fight harsh weather and a fierce pack of wolves in the Alaskan wilderness.

The movie played at 3,185 North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters and earned a per-theater average of $6,279, according to the box office division of Hollywood.com.

Distributor Open Road Films acquired the film for about $5 million and had projected up to $12 million in debut weekend sales. The film beat that forecast because "it doesn't look like every other movie out there. In a crowded marketplace, I think it's important to be distinctive," said Open Road Films CEO Tom Ortenberg.

Katherine Heigl's new comedy, "One for the Money," finished in third place with $11.8 million, topping industry forecasts of less than $10 million for the film, which is based on a best-selling book by Janet Evanovich. Distributor Lions Gate Entertainment said readers who loved the book helped the movie beat expectations.

"We think the audience that showed up are not frequent moviegoers. They're just huge fans of Janet Evanovich," said David Spitz, head of domestic distribution for Lions Gate.

In the film, Heigl plays a cash-strapped woman who joins a bail-bond business and must track down a wanted man who happens to be an ex-boyfriend. Audiences surveyed by exit polling firm CinemaScore game the movie a B-minus on average.

OSCAR BOOST

The weekend's other new movie, crime drama "Man on a Ledge," landed in fifth place. The film was distributed by Lions Gate's newly acquired Summit Entertainment unit as release dates and marketing plans were set well before the studios combined earlier this month.

"Man on a Ledge" took in $8.3 million, within studio forecasts. The movie features "Avatar" star Sam Worthington as a fugitive who threatens to jump from a hotel ledge.

"Red Tails," a drama about black fighter pilots in World War Two, brought in $10.4 million to land in fourth place in its second weekend in theaters.

Also this weekend, a crop of films capitalized off last week's Oscar nominations.

"The Descendants," starring George Clooney as a father dealing with a family crisis, expanded to 2,001 theaters from 560 and gained 176 percent from last weekend. The movie took in $6.6 million, lifting its domestic tally to $58.5 million since its release last November. The movie has added $27 million in international markets for a worldwide total of $85.5 million.

Black-and-white silent film "The Artist" increased its weekend sales by 40 percent from a week earlier, bringing in $3.3 million after adding 235 more screens. To date, the film has grossed $16.7 million domestically.

Family film "Hugo," which led the Oscar nominations with 11, also jumped 143 percent to $2.3 million. Its total sales to date stand at $58.7 million domestically.

Open Road Films, a joint venture between theater owners Regal Entertainment Group and AMC Entertainment Inc, released "The Grey." The film unit of Sony Corp distributed "Underworld: Awakening." "Red Tails" and "The Descendants" were released by divisions of News Corp's Fox Filmed Entertainment. Privately-held The Weinstein Co released "The Artist," and Viacom Inc unit Paramount Pictures distributed "Hugo."

Iran upbeat on nuclear visit, delays EU oil ban

Iran sent conflicting signals in a dispute with the West over its nuclear ambitions on Sunday, vowing to stop oil exports soon to "some" countries but postponing a parliamentary debate on a proposed halt to such sales to the European Union.

The Islamic Republic declared itself optimistic about a visit by U.N. nuclear experts that began on Sunday but also warned the inspectors to be "professional" or see Tehran reducing cooperation with the world body on atomic matters.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspection delegation will seek to advance efforts to resolve a row about nuclear work which Iran says is for making electricity but the West suspects is aimed at seeking a nuclear weapon.

Tensions with the West rose this month when Washington and the European Union (EU) imposed the toughest sanctions yet in a drive to force Tehran to provide more information on its nuclear program. The measures take direct aim at the ability of OPEC's second biggest oil exporter to sell its crude.

In a remark suggesting Iran would fight sanctions with sanctions, Iran's oil minister said the Islamic state would soon stop exporting crude to "some" countries.

Rostam Qasemi did not identify the countries but was speaking less than a week after the EU's 27 member states agreed to stop importing crude from Iran from July 1.

"Soon we will cut exporting oil to some countries," the state news agency IRNA quoted Qasemi as saying.

Iranian lawmakers had been due to debate a bill on Sunday that could have cut off oil supplies to the EU in days, in a move calculated to hit ailing European economies before the EU-wide ban on took effect.

But Iranian MPs postponed discussing the measure.

"No such draft bill has yet been drawn up and nothing has been submitted to the parliament. What exists is a notion by the deputies which is being seriously pursued to bring it to a conclusive end," Emad Hosseini, spokesman for parliament's Energy Committee, told Mehr.

Iranian officials say sanctions have had no impact on the country.

"Iranian oil has its own market, even if we cut our exports to Europe," oil minister Qasemi said.

Another lawmaker, Mohammad Karim Abedi, said the bill would oblige the government to cut Iran's oil supplies to the European Union for five to 15 years, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

By turning the sanctions back on the EU, lawmakers hope to deny the bloc a six-month window it had planned to give those of its members most dependent on Iranian oil - including some of the most economically fragile in southern Europe - to adapt.

The Mehr news agency quoted Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi as saying during a trip to Ethiopia: "We are very optimistic about the outcome of the IAEA delegation's visit to Iran ... Their questions will be answered during this visit."

"We have nothing to hide and Iran has no clandestine (nuclear) activities."

Striking a sterner tone, Iran's parliament speaker, Ali Larijani, warned the IAEA team to carry out a "logical, professional and technical" job or suffer the consequences.

"This visit is a test for the IAEA. The route for further cooperation will be open if the team carries out its duties professionally," said Larijani, state media reported.

"Otherwise, if the IAEA turns into a tool (for major powers to pressure Iran), then Iran will have no choice but to consider a new framework in its ties with the agency."

Iran's parliament in the past has approved bills to oblige the government to review its level of cooperation with the IAEA. However, Iran's top officials have always underlined the importance of preserving ties with the watchdog body.

Before departing from Vienna, IAEA Deputy Director General Herman Nackaerts said he hoped the Islamic state would tackle the watchdog's concerns "regarding the possible military dimensions of Iran's nuclear program."

The head of the state-run National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) said late on Saturday that the export embargo would hit European refiners, such as Italy's Eni, that are owed oil from Iran as part of long-standing buy-back contracts under which they take payment for past oilfield projects in crude.

"The European companies will have to abide by the provisions of the buyback contracts," Ahmad Qalebani told the ISNA news agency. "If they act otherwise, they will be the parties to incur the relevant losses and will subject the repatriation of their capital to problems."

Italy's Eni is owed $1.4-1.5 billion in oil for contracts it executed in Iran in 2000 and 2001 and has been assured by EU policymakers its buyback contracts will not be part of the European embargo, but the prospect of Iran acting first may put that into doubt.

Eni declined to comment on Sunday.

The EU accounted for 25 percent of Iranian crude oil sales in the third quarter of 2011. However, analysts say the global oil market will not be overly disrupted if parliament votes for the bill that would turn off the oil tap for Europe.

Potentially more disruptive to the world oil market and global security is the risk of Iran's standoff with the West escalating into military conflict.

Iran has repeatedly said it could close the vital Strait of Hormuz shipping lane if sanctions succeed in preventing it from exporting crude, a move Washington said it would not tolerate.

The IAEA's visit may be an opportunity to defuse some of the tension. Director General Yukiya Amano has called on Iran to show a "constructive spirit" and Tehran has said it is willing to discuss "any issues" of interest to the U.N. agency, including the military-linked concerns.

But Western diplomats, who have often accused Iran of using such offers of dialogue as a stalling tactic while it presses ahead with its nuclear program, say they doubt Tehran will show the kind of concrete cooperation the IAEA wants.

They say Iran may offer limited concessions and transparency to try to ease intensifying international pressure, but that this is unlikely to amount to the full cooperation required.

The outcome could determine whether Iran will face further isolation or whether there are prospects for resuming wider talks between Tehran and the major powers on the nuclear row.

Salehi said Iran "soon" would write a letter to the E.U.'s foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to discuss "a date and venue" for fresh nuclear talks.

"Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili in this letter, which may be sent in the coming days, also may mention other issues as well," Salehi said, without elaborating.

The last round of talks in January 2011 between Jalili and Ashton, who represents major powers, failed over Iran's refusal to halt its sensitive nuclear work.

"The talks will be successful as the other party seems interested in finding a way out of this deadlock," Salehi said.

Madonna says charity plans 10 schools in Malawi (omg!)

NEW YORK (AP) ? Nearly six years after it was created, Madonna's Raising Malawi charity is set to break ground on the construction of schools in the impoverished country, but they will be run by the local community, not the superstar's organization.

According to organizers, work on the first school will start on March 30 in the Kasungu area, about 80 miles from the capital of Lilongwe, and all of the schools should be built by June 2013. Raising Malawi is providing $300,000 to the non-governmental organization buildOn to develop the schools. They'll serve about 1,000 boys and girls in the southern African nation.

"This remains a very big priority in my life and I am excited that with the help of buildOn we can maintain our ongoing commitment to move forward efficiently," Madonna said in a statement provided to The Associated Press.

Raising Malawi had originally intended to build all-girls schools that the organization would run. But it faced several obstacles in its goal, including complaints from some local farmers that they had been moved off land that Raising Malawi intended to use for its mission. Raising Malawi also had difficulty getting title to the land and there were concerns about the high costs of construction.

The new plan calls for "simple structures" that will be more practical and better serve Raising Malawi's original mission, said Trevor Neilson, who is helping to direct the project as partner of the Global Philanthropy Group. The approach will allow the program to serve twice as many children as before, Madonna said.

"I have learned a great deal over the last few years and feel so much more confident that we can reach out goals to educate children in Malawi, especially young girls, in a much more efficient and practical way," she said. Madonna has adopted two children from Malawi.

BuildOn has already built more than 50 schools in Malawi and 427 schools worldwide.

"For schools to be successful, they need to have community ownership and leadership," Neilson said in an interview Friday. "Raising Malawi shouldn't be running schools in Malawi. Local communities in Malawi should be running those schools, so that's a big part of the shift."

BuildOn has been working in Malawi for almost 20 years, said spokeswoman Carrie Pena. The organization works closely with the community, and locals even volunteer the labor to build the schools, according to Pena.

"It's absolutely a community-owned school," she said.

Neilson praised Madonna for sticking with her plan to build schools for Malawi's children despite several setbacks for the star, who is the director of the new movie "W.E.," out next week, and is this year's Super Bowl performer. Madonna brought in Global Philanthropy to work with Raising Malawi more than a year ago and removed the involvement of the Kabbalah Centre. She has practiced Kabbalah, a form of Jewish mysticism.

"When the previous management team had those problems, I think a lot of people thought Madonna would give up," Neilson said "It would have been understandable, but instead she's going to reaching twice as many kids."

No Democrat should want a Gingrich nomination

The future of America is too important to accept even a small risk of a Gingrich presidency.

Republicans are worried sick about Newt Gingrich?s ascendance, while Democrats are tickled pink.

Yet no responsible Democrat should be pleased at the prospect that Gingrich could get the GOP nomination. The future of America is too important to accept even a small risk of a Gingrich presidency.

The Republican worry is understandable. ?The possibility of Newt Gingrich being our nominee against Barack Obama I think is essentially handling the election over to Obama,? says former Minnesota Governor Tom Pawlenty, a leading GOP conservative. ?I think that?s shared by a lot of folks in the Republican party.?

Pawlenty?s views are indeed widely shared in Republican circles. ?He?s not a conservative ? he?s an opportunist,? says pundit Joe Scarborough, a member of the Republican Class of 1994 who came to Washington under Gingrich?s banner. Gingrich doesn?t ?have the temperament, intellectual discipline or ego control to be either a successful nominee or president,?says New York Republican representative Peter King, who hasn?t endorsed any candidate. ?Basically, Newt can?t control himself.?

Gingrich is ?an embarrassment to the party,? says New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie, and ?was run out of the speakership? on ethics violations. Republican strategist Mike Murphy says ?Newt Cingrich could not carry a swing state in the general election if it was made of feathers.?

?Weird? is the word I hear most from Republicans who have worked with him. Scott Klug, a former Republican House member from Wisconsin, who hasn?t endorsed anyone yet, says ?Newt has ten ideas a day ? two of them are good, six are weird and two are very weird.??

Newt?s latest idea, for example ? to colonize the moon ? is typically whacky.

The Republican establishment also points to polls showing Gingrich?s supporters to be enthusiastic but his detractors even more fired up. In the latest ABC News/ Washington Post poll, 29 percent view Gingrich favorably while 51 percent have an unfavorable view of him. (Obama, by contrast, draws a 53 percent favorable and 43 percent unfavorable.)

Independents, who will be key to the general election, are especially alarmed by Gingrich.

As they should be. It?s not just Newt?s weirdness. It?s also the stunning hypocrisy. His personal life makes a mockery of his moralistic bromides. He condemns Washington insiders but had a forty-year Washington career that ended with ethic violations. He fulminates against finance yet drew fat checks from Freddie Mac. He poses as a populist but has had a $500,000 revolving charge at Tiffany?s.

And it?s the flagrant irresponsibility of many of his propositions ? for example, that presidents are not bound by Supreme Court rulings, that the liberal Ninth Circuit court of appeals should be abolished, that capital gains should not be taxed, that the First Amendment guarantees freedom ?of? religion but not ?from? religion.

It?s also Gingrich?s eagerness to channel the public?s frustrations into resentments against immigrants, blacks, the poor, Muslims, ?liberal elites,? the mainstream media, and any other group that?s an easy target of white middle-class and working-class anger.

These are all the hallmarks of a demagogue.

Yet Democratic pundits, political advisers, officials and former officials are salivating over the possibility of a Gingrich candidacy. They agree with key Republicans that Newt would dramatically increase the odds of Obama?s reelection and would also improve the chances of Democrats taking control over the House and retaining control over the Senate.

I warn you. It?s not worth the risk.

Even if the odds that Gingrich as GOP presidential candidate would win the general election are 10 percent, that?s too much of a risk to the nation. No responsible American should accept a 10 percent risk of a President Gingrich.

I?d take a 49 percent odds of a Mitt Romney win ? who in my view would make a terrible president ? over a 10 percent possibility that Newt Gingrich would become the next president ? who would be an unmitigated disaster for America and the world.

Nintendo posts loss on strong yen, weak sales (AP)

TOKYO ? Nintendo Co. sank to losses for the April-December period, battered by a price cut for its 3DS handheld, a strong yen that erodes overseas earnings and competition from mobile devices such as the iPhone that offer games-on-the-go.

The Japanese video game machine maker behind the Super Mario and Pokemon franchises said Thursday it now expects to sell far fewer of its 3DS machines, which feature three-dimensional images. It is forecasting sales of 14 million machines for the fiscal year through March 2012, down from an earlier 16 million. That's despite a price cut for the 3DS in August.

Nintendo, which also makes the Wii home console, posted a loss of 48.35 billion yen ($627.9 million) for the first nine months through December. That was a reversal from a 49.56 billion yen profit the same period in 2010. Nintendo did not break down quarterly numbers.

The company said it will have Wii U, the successor to the Wii, ready in time for the year-end holiday season. Earlier, it had said the machine, which has a touch-screen controller, will go on sale in the latter half of this year. But some had been skeptical whether it would be ready. Nintendo hasn't announced prices.

Kyoto-based Nintendo also lowered its annual earnings forecast to a 65 billion yen ($844 million) loss, much larger than the 20 billion yen ($260 million) loss projected earlier. It posted a 77.62 billion yen profit the previous fiscal year.

Nintendo's past success has come from the appeal of its products to so-called casual gamers ? people who now turn to smartphones and tablet devices such as the iPad from Apple Inc. to enjoy games.

The demand for the Wii has also diminished in recent months.

Nintendo is now expecting to sell 10 million Wii machines in the year ending March, down from an initial estimate of 13 million, which was revised lower to 12 million in July.

Nintendo's nine-month sales dropped 31.2 percent to 556.17 billion yen from the same period the previous year.

The numbers are a disappointment as they include the key year-end holiday season.

"Sales of the 3DS were strong in Japan, but Christmas shopping got to a late start overall in the U.S. and Europe," said Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa. "But we are upbeat about hardware and software sales for next fiscal year."

Worldwide sales of the 3DS for the nine months totaled 11.43 million, the company said. Game software for the 3DS like "Super Mario 3D Land" became million sellers, but games from outside companies did not fare as well, it said.

Competition in portable gaming is heating up with the arrival of the PlayStation Vita from Japanese electronics and entertainment company Sony Corp. Vita went on sale in Japan in December and next month in the U.S. and Europe.

Nintendo has continuously outpaced Sony in portable game sales with its hit DS machines.

The strong yen has also hurt Nintendo's bottom line. The dollar has been trading at about 77 yen lately, down from about 83 yen a year earlier.

Nintendo stock slid 0.6 percent to 10,790 yen in Tokyo.

Vitals - More men than women have oral cancer virus

By Rachael Rettner
MyHealthNewsDaily

About 7 percent of adults and teens in the United States are orally infected with the human papillomavirus, or HPV, a new study says. This represents about 14.9 million people.

More men are affected than women: About 10 percent of men ages 14 to 69 have an oral HPV infection, compared with 3.6 percent of women, the study showed.

Oral HPV infections cause some oropharyngeal cancers, or cancers of the tongue, the tonsils or back of the mouth. People who are infected with the strain HPV 16 are 14 times more likely to develop these cancers compared with those not infected with the virus.

The new findings were "reassuring," according to study researcher Dr. Maura Gillison, chair of cancer research at The Ohio State University , because they show that while oral infection with the virus is common, cancer cases as a result of these infections are rare. In other words, most infected people don't get cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates there will be about 40,000 new cases of cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx in 2012.

The findings also show oral HPV infections are, for the most part, sexually transmitted. People who reported engaging in oral sex were twice as likely to have an oral HPV infection as those who did not engage in oral sex. People who had had sex of any kind, including vaginal sex or oral sex, were eight times more likely to have an oral HPV infection than those who had not had sex. Among those who'd had 20 or more sexual partners, one in five had an oral HPV infection.

"Taken together, these data indicate that transmission by casual, nonsexual contact is likely to be unusual," the researchers wrote in their study.

However, there are clues HPV may also spread by kissing. Oral HPV infections were more common among sexually experienced people who had not engaged in oral sex than among sexually inexperienced individuals, a finding that is "consistent with transmission by other sexually associated contact (eg, deep kissing)," the researchers wrote in their study.

"This study of oral HPV infection is the critical first step toward developing potential oropharyngeal cancer prevention strategies," Gillison said. "This is clearly important, because HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer is poised to overtake cervical cancer as the leading type of HPV-caused cancers in the U.S."

More studies are needed to know whether the HPV vaccine effectively prevents oral HPV infections, the researchers said. Currently, the vaccine is recommended to prevent cervical cancer, anal cancer and genital warts.

How common is oral HPV?

Between 1998 and 2004, incidence of new cases of oropharyngeal cancer in the United States more than tripled (from 0.8 cancers per 100,000 people to 2.6 cancers per 100,000 people).

Despite the rise, little was known about the prevalence of oral HPV infection, and the characteristics of those who have it.

In the new study, Gillison and colleagues analyzed data from more than 5,500 men and women in the United States. Participants answered questions about their sexual behavior and substance use. They were also asked to gargle mouthwash for 30 seconds, and cells that were exfoliated into the rinse were analyzed for evidence of HPV infection.

The researchers found HPV in the cells of 6.9 percent of the participants, and HPV 16 in 1 percent.

The infection was most common among those ages 60 to 64 years, (at 11.4 percent), and those ages 30 to 34 (at 7.3 percent).

Physicians should encourage their patients who engage in oral sex to use barrier protection, Dr. Hans P. Schlecht, of the Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia, wrote in an editorial accompanying the study.

Smokers and alcohol users also had a high prevalence of HPV. About 20 percent of those who said they smoke 20 or more cigarettes per day had oral HPV infection.

More research

It's not clear why oral HPV infection was more common among men than women. It could be that HPV is more likely to be transmitted through oral sex on women versus men, the researchers said. Differences in hormone levels between the sexes could also affect the duration of an infection.

Smoking may suppress the immune system, leading to longer infections with the virus, the researchers said.

The researchers noted their findings are based on study participant's reports of their sexual behavior and smoking, which may not be completely accurate.

Researchers need to follow people over time to better understand the effects of age, gender, sexual behavior and smoking on the incidence and duration of oral HPV infections, the researchers said.

The study will be presented this week at the Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Symposium in Phoenix. The study and editorial are published online today (Jan. 26) in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Pass it on: Oral HPV infections affect about 7 percent of adults in teen in the United States, and are more common in men than women.

Mayor lifts gun ban at Town Council meetings

SILVER CITY - On Tuesday night, Silver City Mayor James Marshall quickly rescinded a ban on bringing weapons into Silver City Town Council meetings that he had enacted at the Jan. 10 town council meeting.

Mayor Marshall addressed a full room of residents at Tuesday's night's town council meeting, telling attendees he was going to "take back" the ban and later explained he realized it was unconstitutional, based on a New Mexico Supreme Court case, Baca v. New Mexico Department of Public Safety.

Marshall said he had a whole week of support, with one or two emails a day coming from residents saying they totally supported not having weapons at town council meetings. But then, after word got around and his intent was misinterpreted, opposition started rolling in.

It didn't help that the NRA apparently sent out a postcard to their chapter members in the Silver City area code with some misinformation, the mayor said.

The postcard, which the mayor said he saw, told residents that Marshall had intentions of joining the Mayors Against Illegal Guns group, a national organization of city mayors who promote tougher federal, state, and local gun regulation.

"My statement was that I was approached by the organization to sign on for Silver City and I was requesting input on whether it was a good idea or not," he said.

The mayor said Tuesday night that he is a gun owner and he had no intention of violating anyone's constitutional rights, including his own, or the

three-fifths of the council who are also gun owners. He said his intent, with enacting the ban, was just to make council meetings as comfortable an environment as possible for people to voice their opinions, and that he had been approached in the past by someone who had told him they felt intimidated by someone wearing a weapon at a town council meeting, but he didn't know who that person was with the weapon, and whether it was an undercover police officer.

Marshall said he started aggressively receiving emails opposing the ban on Monday.

"Some were very professional and educational on why this banning guns at council meetings was not a good idea," he said.

Some supported the ban on guns in council meetings but asked why he would he join the Mayors Council Against Illegal Guns.

"Some of them were just really aggressive, like if I want a New York-style gun ban I should move to New York," he said.

But the issue - and the ban - became moot when he discovered that New Mexico case law had already deemed that type of ban unconstitutional.

Baca vs. New Mexico Department of Public Safety states "the Legislature's delegation of authority to local governments to prohibit the carrying of concealed weapons in Section 29-18-11(D) violates the constitutional proscription against municipal and county regulation of an incident of the right to keep and bear arms in Article II, Section 6 of the New Mexico Constitution," and that the "Section 29-18-11(D) is not severable from the remainder of the Concealed Handgun Carry Act and that the Act as a whole is therefore unconstitutional."

The mayor said he appreciated the public's feedback.

"I'm not anti-gun," he said. "I support the Constitution. It was a shame that there was so much misrepresentation and assumptions made. The intent was that people not be intimidated."

Zooey Deschanel, Joel McHale to host WGA West awards (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Zooey Deschanel and Joel McHale will host the Writers Guild of America's awards show from Los Angeles, while Rachel Dratch will do the same in New York, the WGA, West and WGA, East announced on Wednesday.

The two guilds will stage simultaneous awards shows in the two cities on February 19. The WGAW's show will take place at the Hollywood Palladium, while the WGAE's show will be held at the B.B. King Blues Club.

While Deschanel played it straight in the press release announcing the hosts ("I am excited to host the WGA awards. It should be a lot of fun!"), McHale was significantly more playful: "I'm deeply excited to co-host the WGA Awards with Zooey Deschanel. She has that rare combination in that she's beautiful, funny, and smells good. Without writers, movies and TV would be worse than untreated syphilis, so I'm thrilled to hand these fine people awards for their great work."

Deschanel currently stars on the television series "New Girl," and has appeared in the films "(500) Days of Summer," "Our Idiot Brother" and "Elf."

McHale stars in the NBC series "Community" and hosts the E! show "The Soup." He hosted last year's Film Independent Spirit Awards.

Dratch is a seven-year veteran of "Saturday Night Live," and has also appeared in the films "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" and "Just Go With It" and the television series "30 Rock."

Building collapses in center of Rio de Janeiro (AP)

RIO DE JANEIRO ? A multistory building collapsed in Rio's center Wednesday evening, leaving rubble strewn over a wide area but confusion about the number of possible victims and the cause.

Thick layers of debris covered cars and motorcycles. A neighboring building sustained serious damage, and television showed at least two people on its roof apparently awaiting help from firefighters.

There were differing reports about possible deaths.

A spokeswoman from the city's Civil Defense department said two people were confirmed dead, but officials from City Hall and the municipal health department later disputed that, saying no deaths had been confirmed by early Thursday. It was not clear how many people were injured.

Searchers were still picking through the rubble hours after the collapse.

There was a strong smell of natural gas in the area, but Rio's mayor said there were doubts that a gas leak caused the accident.

"There apparently was not an explosion. The collapse occurred because of structural damages," he said. "I don't think there was a gas leak."

Witnesses had reported hearing a loud explosion-like sound just before the building fell, and a strong odor of gas hung over the scene.

It was not immediately clear how big the damaged buildings were. The one nearly destroyed was at least five stories high. It sat near Rio's historic Teatro Municipal and the Fine Arts Museum, both of which appeared undamaged.

The Civil Defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she believed the collapsed building was for commercial use and not residential. The explosion happened after 8 p.m. and there were hopes that would minimize the number of people who might have been in the area.

Police cordoned off the area and electricity to the street was cut off for safety reasons.

Eating smart: Researcher studies foods, dietary supplements that may reduce risk of prostate cancer

MANHATTAN, KAN. -- A Kansas State University professor is turning to nutrition to tackle prostate cancer.

Brian Lindshield, assistant professor of human nutrition, is helping men make more informed diet decisions by studying foods and dietary supplements that may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer among men in the United States.

"I'm interested in researching ways to prevent prostate cancer rather than how to treat it after a person has been diagnosed with cancer," Lindshield said.

The goal of Lindshield's research is twofold: He is performing basic studies that examine specific drugs as well as dietary supplements. His research has been supported by grants from the Johnson Cancer Research Center and the National Institute of Health Center of Biomedical Research Excellence, or COBRE, for epithelial function in health and disease.

One project focuses specifically on two drugs -- finasteride and dutasteride -- that are used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, which is an enlargement of the prostate. Both drugs inhibit enzymes that convert the male hormone testosterone to a more potent form, called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. Finasteride inhibits one of these enzymes, while dutasteride inhibits both of these enzymes.

Because these drugs inhibit DHT production, they may also prevent the development of prostate cancer. Several clinical trials have shown that both drugs decrease prostate cancer incidence, but at a cost.

"Among the men who took these drugs and still got prostate cancer, more of them had a high-grade or more aggressive prostate cancer," Lindshield said. "It's kind of a double-edged sword. These drugs can lower the risk of developing prostate cancer, but they also might lead to worse outcomes for men who do develop the disease."

That's where Lindshield's research fits in: He is comparing finasteride and dutasteride to see if one is better than the other.

"Our hypothesis is that dutasteride is a better option because it inhibits both enzymes while finasteride only inhibits one," Lindshield said.

For a second project, Lindshield is studying different dietary supplements that affect prostate cancer risk. He is focusing on extract from saw palmetto, a type of shrub that looks similar to a palm tree. Many men take saw palmetto extract because it is believed to benefit prostatic health and inhibit the same enzymes as finasteride and dutasteride. But a lack of regulation and research surrounding saw palmetto has not provided clear insight into whether taking the extract is beneficial.

"The supplement market is kind of the wild world of whatever goes," Lindshield said. "It is not regulated in the United States, so many different kinds of saw palmetto extracts exist."

Lindshield wants to determine the composition of different saw palmetto extracts and determine which ones may be most effective. So far the researchers have collected various saw palmetto extracts -- from small liquids to capsules. They are beginning to measure the active components of each of the extracts and then will look at different extracts to see if they are effective in decreasing prostate cancer.

"We want to look at how they affect growth of prostate cancer cells and inhibit the enzymes that produce DHT," Lindshield said.

While both projects are in the early stages, Lindshield hopes that they can provide insight into ways that men can reduce their risk of prostate cancer.

WWE responds to Conn. Senate candidate's criticism (AP)

STAMFORD, Conn. ? WWE professional wrestling is accusing Connecticut Senate candidate Chris Shays of making untrue accusations about the company once run by Linda McMahon, a fellow Republican vying for the party's nomination.

Shays told The Associated Press recently that McMahon was "basically in the soft-core porn business."

WWE spokesman Robert Zimmerman released a letter to Shays on Monday, saying the former congressman visited the company's headquarters and supported its SmackDown Your Vote campaign, which encouraged young people to register.

Zimmerman also cited WWE's efforts to combat bullying, contrary to Shays' claims WWE promotes bullying.

Shays spokeswoman Amanda Bergen says books and articles have been written about WWE and "the facts are the facts." Bergen says McMahon can't talk about her business experience without talking about her business.

Antioch Shooting: Six Hurt During Attack At California 'Sweet Sixteen' Party

ANTIOCH, Calif. -- Six people, including five teens, were injured when gunfire erupted at a girl's 16th birthday party in the San Francisco Bay area, authorities said Sunday.

Police in Antioch believe three or four male partygoers opened fire Saturday night when two groups began arguing, said police Lt. Scott Willerford. Violence is not common in the neighborhood in Antioch, which is about 38 miles northeast of San Francisco.

"Weapons were brandished and numerous shots were fired from multiple guns," Willerford said.

The gunfire wounded a 13-year-old boy, two 16-year-old boys, two 18-year-old men and a 21-year-old woman, police said. Their injuries ranged from a minor grazing wound to an abdomen wound, police said. Police did not say how many shots were fired, or specify what kind of weapons were used.

Three of the wounded have been released from hospitals, but the 13-year-old, an 18-year-old and the woman remained in serious but stable condition, police said. Their names have not been released.

Police are looking for three or four suspects described as "young men," but acknowledge they haven't been able to obtain more detailed descriptions. Willerford said callers reporting the shooting had said between 70 and 80 people were at the party, but many of them ran away when the gunfire broke out.

Authorities said the party was being thrown by the girl's parents.

India Plans Mars Probe in Drive to Become Asian Space Power (ContributorNetwork)

According to Asian Scientist, India's next space mission might be one to Mars, with a probe designed to orbit the red planet and to study it with a variety of instruments. This effort would be another feat for a burgeoning space power.

What would the Indian Mars probe do?

The Indian Mars probe is envisioned to be launched in one of the three upcoming Earth to Mars transit windows, in 2013, 2016 or 2018. If it were to be launched in November 2013, as many in India hope, it would arrive in Mars orbit in September 2014, assuming a highly elliptical orbit of 500 kilometers by 80,000 kilometers.

Ten instruments have been proposed for the Mars probe, of which a few will eventually be chosen. A color camera would image the Martian topography as well as events such as dust storms in real time. Most of the other proposed instruments would examine the Martian atmosphere.

What have been some of the previous Indian space feats?

The Indian Space Research Organization orbited a probe, Chandrayaan 1, around the moon in the November 2008 in a mission that lasted until August 2009. During its mission, Chandrayaan mapped minerals on the lunar surface, imaged the moon's landscape and discovered indications of ice at the lunar north and south poles.

Besides Chandrayaan, India has developed its own fleet of domestic launch vehicles and has launched numerous Earth satellites, scientific, commercial and military.

What are India's future plans in space?

Besides the Mars probe, India is developing Chandrayaan 2 to orbit the moon as well as to send a lander and rover to the lunar surface. India is also planning a solar research satellite called Aditya-1.

Through an Indian astronaut flew on a Soviet Soyuz mission in the mid-1980s, India is keen to develop its own domestic manned space program. An Indian space capsule, designed to hold three astronauts, would orbit the Earth for seven days after being launched a launch vehicle still under development.

Why is Indian interested in space exploration?

There are two reasons.

India is becoming an advance, technologically oriented nation, with its own domestic computer software industry. It is aware that space can be a driver for technological development, creating wealth and job opportunities.

The other reason is China, India's main rival in Asia, is a space power. China has launched its own lunar probe and a number of manned space flights leading to the future creation of a space station and an eventual manned lunar landing. In effect, India is joining an Asian space race with the prize of which country can become the supreme space power on that continent.

Mark R. Whittington is the author of Children of Apollo and The Last Moonwalker . He has written on space subjects for a variety of periodicals, including The Houston Chronicle, The Washington Post, USA Today, the L.A. Times, and The Weekly Standard.

Video Making Workshop 101

This post is being written as I am sitting here at Science Online 2012. Along with Jim Hutchins and Rob Nelson, I ran a workshop about making science videos. Thanks to all who attended, participated in the discussions, and asked questions!

We asked participants to consider their audience, their objectives and their budget (money, time and emotional).

My impression was that most people in the audience had made videos, or at least gave it a shot, and were looking for ways to improve production values. (Perhaps they were looking for the automated ?Press Here to Make a Great Video? Button!)

There are many things to consider as video making is a multifactorial process that requires a lot of pre-planning, designing a story and imagining the flow. Then you need to consider the equipment, setting, lighting and sound, and your hosts/characters, choosing ones that are charismatic and interesting.

Producing a great video can be complex. Imagine replacing your roof. Sure, you can do it yourself, but a professional has the tools and expertise that will give a good result the first time in a short time. So, if you have a budget or other resources, it would be worthwhile to turn over the ?heavy lifting? of production to people with experience unless you are particularly keen to learn how to do this yourself.

If you came to the presentation looking for nuts and bolts information (cameras, editing, what to wear, etc), see the powerpoint presentation that Carin and I presented last year.

One of the participants inquired about a video formula that scientists could use in making a video that presented their work. I was unaware that someone has created a resource to lay out what should be done. However, I did recommend, if you want to present your science to other scientists, versus the general public, ?visit the videos that are found in JoVE, SciVee and BenchFly for ideas.

Journal of Visualized Experiments?are videos filmed by those at JoVE of scientific experiments. It costs to have the team come out and film and also costs to subscribe to watch the videos.

Benchfly is similar to JoVE. There is a fee to have them come film your techniques, but access is free to anyone who wants to watch the end result.

SciVee is also a subscription service where scientists have put up videos presenting their work or videos. There is no team to film the videos.

For those of you who wish to make a drawing/animated video type videos such as the ones the Minute Physics do, you might check out the free Educreations for iPad.

Participants were interested in stock video, which can be expensive. Rob suggested looking for video/movies in http://www.archive.org

If you are interested in screen capture, there are many options.?Camtasia is very popular, but Jing is free

There were many questions about editing. There is a learning curve and there are a lot of videos online that can help you learn it. Good editing is an art and if there is a vision, the editing is much easier.

iMovie is a free option on a Mac, but if you want to go to a higher level, you can graduate to Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro. There is a learning curve and thankfully, there are a lot of tutorial videos online that can help you learn it. Good editing is an art and if there is a vision, the editing is much easier. If you are on PC, you might consider Pinnacle Studio or Adobe Creative Suite.

Jim Hutchins, who helped to present the videomaking workshop has this to add:

?The strength of Science Online is the social interaction that is catalyzed by the meeting. As session organizers, it?s our hope that we?create and foster interactions that continue for long after the conference is ended. It?s all about collaboration, folks! Social media are more powerful when we have personal interactions to back up the online interactions. There were a wide range of participants from a wide range of backgrounds with a wide range of budgets. Hopefully, we all found at least one other person in the session who shares a common interest and who can act as our sounding board. Writers have ?beta readers? to look over our words before we foist them on the public; our videos should have ?beta viewers? who not only can fact-check and edit, but who can develop their own ideas as they review?.

Feel free to contact any of us with future questions.
