Apple using special connectors for some iOS devices in stores

Apple is one company that everyone wants to have a product from. Sometimes, people resort to theft to obtain said products. Well, Apple is now taking precautions from this in its stores in the form of a redesigned dock connecter. It looks exactly the same, with the exception of a lock logo on the top of it (see picture). The workings of it however prevent it from being taken out of the device, which, of course, is the reason for the lock.

The connecter is reportedly being used throughout the US in many stores, and was first spotted by an AppleInsider reader who sent the picture in. They don?t seem to be on all the products though, but only the more expensive ones like the new iPad. This could be because they are just beginning to make them, and therefore don?t have many to use yet. Better to protect the more expensive items first. They are also believed to be alarm equipped.

What do you think? Have you seen these? If so, what store did you? Let us know in the comments.

San Francisco Diller Teen Fellows: Shabbat in the Upper Galilee

This week for Shabbat I was staying at a house that is Shomer Shabbas (A shomer Shabbat or shomer Shabbos is a person who observes the mitzvot (commandments) associated with Judaism's Shabbat). It was a very new experience for me and I went in a little scared to mess up the families Shabbat. Luckily, nothing went wrong it was an altogether very fun Saturday. I got to wake up late and when I went out, a lot of their family was over. I played board games with the kids, listened to the adults argue in Hebrew, and didn't think once about Facebook. It was a little crazy since I met seven of the nine if my host mothers siblings and their families, but I really enjoyed having a day off and not having to worry about what was happening on the Internet.

Shabbat Shalom,

Diner en Blanc: Parisian Pop-up Picnickining en Masse ...

Diner en Blanc New York 2012 setup at Lincoln Center Plaza.

It?s the afternoon rush hour in New York City. Most people are heading home. Thirty-two hundred others have made Superman-style changes into all-white outfits at their office building restrooms or the gym to attend Diner en Blanc?(White Dinner), an elegant Parisian pop-up picnic held at a secret city location.

Meeting up outside of Starbucks at 60th and Broadway.

What started in 1988 in France as a modest outdoor soiree hosted by?Fran?ois Pasquier,?has ballooned into an international phenomenon. The Paris edition now draws 15,000 guests. There are Diner en Blanc (D.E.B.) events celebrated in such places as Kigali, Rwanda; Sydney, Australia; and Barcelona, Spain will celebrate its first on September 13, 2012.

The first Diner en Blanc in New York happened in 2011. Then, 1,200 guests enjoyed an al fresco dining experience at the World Financial Center downtown. Over 30,000 people were on the waiting list and due to a computer glitch, some received false confirmations.

I was one of them.

Luckily, Diner en Blanc, as a way of apologizing, placed those who were accidentally sent confirmations on a priority list for the 2012 edition. For 2012, the organizers also expanded the numbers to include 3,200 guests.

And I got in this time, for real.

Arrival at the secret locale: Lincoln Center Plaza.

At the time of registration, you pay a membership fee of $4, which, if you follow the laundry list of D.E.B. rules, entitles you to an invite to future editions. This year New Yorkers dined under the stars and beside the fountain at Lincoln Center Plaza. The cost to dine is $25 per person and it is a B.Y.O.P (Bring Your Own Picnic) affair. Although, you can purchase food and alcohol ? the rules state that you may not bring your own booze ? from the organizers. However, the prices are high and the pickup lines long.

After convening outside a Starbucks, our table leader led us to the ? what was still ? secret locale. Music from the likes of Edith Piaf welcomed diners clad in white and carrying tables, chairs and picnic wares. This was followed by a live musical performance. At around 8:30 p.m., the sophisticated outdoor picnic turned into a dance party. Napkins were whirled around in the air, bubbles blown and the white balloons handed out earlier and tied to chairs began to float up into the night sky. A D.J. spun dance and disco hits.

Just before sunset, everyone settles in to the al fresco D.E.B. dining experience.

The evening ended at 10 p.m. to the tune of Frank Sinatra?s New York, New York and various kick lines popped up in the aisles between the rows of tables.

Philadelphia and Chicago celebrate their first pop-up D.E.B. picnics on August 23rd and 24th respectively.

If you?re attending a D.E.B. event soon, or hope to in the future, here?s what you?ll need:

  • A white (not cream, not ivory), elegant outfit
  • A folding square table + 2 white folding chairs (If you don?t have white chairs, cover with a cloth or slipcover.) (Ikea?s?H?R? folding table and chairs work well.)
  • A wheeled cart or small dolly for transporting the table and chairs (You can get this from Deals & Discounts, Ikea, Target, etc?)
  • A white bag or a white picnic basket (I got the Sutherland Yorkshire Picnic Basket for 2 from Picnicbaskets, through Amazon, and threw the white tablecloth between the handle to disguise its non-white wickerness.)
  • White tablecloth and 2 white cloth napkins

All good things must end. New York?s Diner en Blanc 2012 wrapped up around 10 p.m.

  • Dinnerware: 2 large white plates, 2 dessert plates, 2 sets of cutlery, 2 glasses (no plastic)?(The basket I purchased had small plates, so I borrowed larger plates from my roommates.)
  • Food and drink: A first course, cold main course and a cheese/dessert course, baguette/bread. (We had prosciutto and bread, followed by tabouleh as our main course and then strawberries and blueberries with brownies for dessert.) A bottle of water and soft drinks (Alcohol drinks are only available through the caterers.)
  • One trash bag
  • Centerpiece: bouquet and candles (From Michaels: white silk flowers, 2 tall votive candle holders and 2 flameless/electric tea lights, the flowers were placed in a white and orange Harney and Sons tea tin.)
  • In case of rain, purchase a?Wedding?Umbrella?White Jumbo 68? Golf?Umbrella from the Golf Umbrella Store through Amazon, or directly.

Untapped Cities has great coverage of Diner en Blanc events in Paris and New York. There is also a terrific?time-lapse video of D.E.B. New York 2012 on the site.

Curiosity Mars rover flexes its arm for the first time (+video)

NASA's Curiosity Mars rover unfolded its seven-foot, five-jointed robotic arm on Monday, passing a critical test before the rover embarks on its first drive on the Red Planet.

By SPACE.com Staff / August 21, 2012

At the end of Curiosity's seven-foot arm is a turret, shaped like a cross. This turret, a hand-like structure, holds various tools that can spin through a 350-degree turning range. At the tip of the arm is the turret structure on which five devices are mounted. Two of these devices are in-situ or contact instruments known as the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) and the Mars Hand Lens Imager. The remaining three devices are associated with sample acquisition and sample preparation functions.

The arm could potentially drill into the Martian soil and collect samples.

The rover unfolded the robotic arm and performed an intricate series of test maneuvers to make sure the 7-foot-long (2.1-meter) appendage is in good working order.?Curiosity's robotic arm?has five joints and is tipped with sophisticated instruments to get up close and personal with Mars.

Monday's Martian workout flexed all five joints on the robotic arm to extend it out in front of Curiosity, and then fold it back into its travel position ahead of the?rover's first drive, which is also expected to occur in the next few days.

"It worked just as we planned," Louise Jandura, Curiosity's sample system chief engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said in a statement. "From telemetry and from the images received this morning, we can confirm that the arm went to the positions we commanded it to go to."

Curiosity's robotic arm is one of the rover's most powerful toolkits. At the end of the arm is a bulky 66-pound (30-kilogram) turret that is nearly 2 feet wide (60 centimeters). [11 Amazing Facts About the Curiosity Rover]

The arm's turret contains a drill that can dig 1 inch (2.5 cm) into Martian rocks, a scoop and other gear for collecting samples, a camera for microscopic analyses, and a spectrometer to determine the composition of rocket and surface targets.

"We'll start using our sampling system in the weeks ahead, and we're getting ready to try our first drive later this week," said Richard Cook, NASA's deputy project manager for the Curiosity mission.

But more robotic arm tests are needed before Curiosity can begin using the appendage to study Mars.? The arm, mission managers said, must past several calibration checks to make sure it is working properly.

"We have had to sit tight for the first two weeks since landing, while other parts of the rover were checked out, so to see the arm extended in these images is a huge moment for us," said Matt Robinson NASA's lead engineer for the robotic arm testing. "The arm is how we are going to get samples into the laboratory instruments and how we place other instruments onto surface targets."

Curiosity's robotic arm is one of 10 high-tech instruments built into the car-size rover to study Mars like never before. ?

Monday's arm checkout came one day after?Curiosity shot a nearby rock with a laser?built into its mast to make sure the tool worked. That tool is part of Curiosity's Chemistry and Camera (or ChemCam) instrument that determines the composition of targets by zapping them with a laser beam and then analyzing the light from the resulting sparks. The laser system, like the robotic arm, worked as expected.

The $2.5 billion Mars rover Curiosity touched down on the Red Planet on Aug. 5 and is expected to spend at least two years exploring its Gale Crater landing site. The rover is designed to determine if the region could have ever?supported microbial life.

Secure Information Exchange: Then and Now | OpenText Fax ...

??No one is useless in this world,? retorted the Secretary, ?who lightens the burden of it for anyone else.??

The world for Charles Dickens was a world for collaboration: his characters endlessly collaborate (such as is the context in Our Mutual Friend above, when the ?Secretary,? John Rokesmith, speaks with Bella Wilfer about the plan for Bella to befriend Lizzie Hexam, to learn why Lizzie is in hiding); Dickens joined forces with others desiring to improve social conditions; he formed and published weekly journals to provide a medium for literary collaboration.

It was Dickens? immense desire to do good through his writing, particularly to champion the cause of the social needs of the British poor, the working classes, and the prisoners in the mid 19th century.? To his great credit, he succeeded, forcing attention on these issues onto a society that would have preferred to enjoy his novels with his creative genius and his wit but without the strong dose of social reform.

Oliver Twist describes the street life of London orphans and prostitutes.? In Little Dorrit, Dickens focuses on the grim lives of the inmates of the debtors? prisons, in which Dickens own father had been imprisoned for a time.? The title character in Barnaby Rudge is mentally disabled, and several of the characters in Our Mutual Friend, from which we quote at the beginning of this post, have physical disabilities.? In Nicholas Nickleby he exposed the abusive, live-in Yorkshire schools, to which many unwanted children were sent; in A Tale of Two Cities he criticizes the violence in modern society; and in Martin Chuzzlewit and American Notes he takes on American racism.

In addition, Dickens in his public life was dedicated to collaborative social reform, collaborating with other philanthropists to create half-way houses for prostitutes and soup kitchens for the poor.? He gave readings for charitable causes.? He campaigned for healthy and sanitary causes.

Dickens published many of his novels serially via literary magazines that he edited: first Household Words (from 1850-1859) and then in All the Year Round (from 1859 through his death in 1870).? These were magazines dedicated to publishing fiction (from other authors, as well as his own) and treatments of non-fiction topics, especially concerning social issues of the day.? In these magazines, Dickens occasionally collaborated with other authors to co-write short stories and plays; he co-authored The Haunted House in 1859 with five other people.

In all this, Dickens was a businessman as well as a collaborator; let?s turn to the business of collaboration and the collaboration of business.

In a previous post, I mentioned that the first use for sharing information is a simple one: not necessarily toward any end other than to share life electronically: a photo, a link, a song, an article? anything that can be captured or created by one person and then transmitted to another.? In last week?s entry, I looked at the second use case for information exchange, the workflow: I or my organization needs something, a result, and so I transmit information to you or your organization to execute the next step in the process of obtaining that result.

This post is to describe the third use case for sharing information: collaboration.? While workflows exist to move well-established processes forward (buying a house, reserving a hotel room, placing an ad in a newspaper), collaboration involves communication to move processes forward that are not well established.? Typically these processes can be thought of as part of a project (whether the word ?project? is used or not): a temporary endeavor with a unique outcome.? Projects familiar to us include construction projects, strategic planning projects, academic research projects, etc.? But many other endeavors are projects as well: taking a trip, constructing a flower bed; even conducting a romance is a project of sorts.

Collaborative efforts and projects need the secure exchange of information so that scope is well defined, efforts are well coordinated, and the monitoring and inevitable correction are able to occur to bring efforts back in line with the plan.? During his lifetime Dickens himself wrote more than 14,000 letters in a virtual fire hose of communication and information exchange.

Business collaboration typically takes place to further business efforts, to increase revenue, and to decrease costs.? The world is busy with these cooperative efforts; and most of this work is good work.? But Dickens reminds us that in addition to the collaboration we undertake to make our businesses healthy, we should look to the collaboration that eases the burdens of one another.
